I had planned to write something this week, but wasn’t quite in the right headspace to do so. Instead, I’m taking the opportunity to announce what will be coming to this space in the next few days, with a slight tweak to my usual format.
By Wednesday, at the latest, I will publish a report of my experience at this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam (some of my coverage you can find here and here). And starting Thursday, I will be attending the Berlinale, which runs until February 23. I will be covering the festival for The Film Verdict and Next Best Picture (among others), but I plan on doing some writing here as well.
Previously, my festival writings on this page consisted of a single piece at the end, with the exception of Cannes which occasionally spawned two articles. This year, the idea is to try doing regular dispatches, with an overview of all the films I’ll be watching, published every two days. The first of these dispatches will be freely accessible, the rest (including the final piece with the customary thoughts on the festival as a whole) will be paywalled.
Going forward, this will be the new structure of the newsletter in terms of the free/paid ratio: festival dispatches (including interviews) will be paywalled, the rest will be free. So, if you are interested in what I have to say about what’s coming at the Berlinale, now is a good opportunity to upgrade your subscription. As a reminder, paid subscribers have access to the entire Talking Pictures archive, and get to comment on the articles. Those who choose the Founding Member option get the additional perk of having the possibility of suggesting topics they might like to see covered.
That’s it for now. See you in a few days, and watch this space…
