Every year, in the first half of June, thousands of animation professionals and aficionados (be they students or journalists) flock to the lovely lakeside town of Annecy, in France, for what is the world’s oldest and most important film festival devoted to the artform (not a genre, as Guillermo del Toro famously and swearily pointed out two years ago). Since 2017, I’ve been among those aficionados, only missing out on physical attendance in 2021 (the previous year was fully digital, for obvious reasons).
